Mittal is richest man in UK despite plunging fortunes

With a fortune of 10.8 billion pounds, India-born steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal emerged as the richest person in the UK for fifth consecutive year.

However, a whopping erosion of 16.9 billion pounds due to recession has also earned him the title of the biggest loser. His fortune is now estimated at 10.8 billion pound, down from 27.7 billion pound last year.

The Sunday Times Rich List, 2009 was published on April 26. This ranks 1,000 richest individuals in the UK. The recession has resulted in plunging fortunes for most of the billionaires. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal, Mittal has lost the most—about 17 billion pounds—but is still the richest man in England with 10.8 billion pounds.

The steel tycoon, along with Ambani Brothers-Mukesh and Anil, was among the ten wealthiest CEOs in the world in January 2009, according to Forbes.
